The Global Warming Swindle: Causes, Effects & Facts About Global Warming

Is Global Warming a Hoax?

As climate change affects our weather, questions about the validity of scientific statements about global warming being caused by human industry have heated up the Climate Debate.

Most climate scientists blame the massive amount of pollution thrown out into the ground, water and air since the beginning of the Industrial Revolution as the cause. They say that the effects of this 'massive total' pollution will be a weakening of the ecological system.

This weakening, they say, is already resulting in a cataclysmic melting of the ice caps of the planet, a rising of sea levels around the world, an increase in human health problems (especially the increase in cancer), a decreasing in the ability of agriculture to feed the expanding human population. The end result, they say, will be a significant decrease in the ecological system, which will end in the collapse of human civilization.

On the other hand, many politicians and business spokespeople (especially for the petroleum industry) claim that there is a Global Warming Swindle going on. 'It's all a hoax!' they are saying. Global warming is just part of historical change, they are stating. 'Over long periods of geological history, the climate naturally swings from Ice Age conditions to a worldwide temporate climate. We are just in a natural warming phase.'

A noted historian, not wanting to be identified, once told me that he believed that the world saw such a warming trend just a thousand years ago. 'That's why the Viking settlements in the New World first succeeded and then failed. Global warming. When Eric the Red first discovered North America around 980 AD, the North Atlantic was ice free between Iceland and Newfoundland. The Norse were able to travel in their open dragonships year round. They called what is now Nova Scotia 'Vineland,' because the warmer climate allowed lush grape vines to grow there.

'But by the year 1100,' he continued, 'the climate had cooled down enough that winter storms were worstening, the growing season was getting shorter and sea ice was appearing. The Vikings abandoned the New World because of Global Cooling.'

Is the world just returning to the climate of a thousand years ago?

The Global Warming Hoax

In a recent op-ed in the Wall Street Journal titled 'No Need to Panic About Global Warming' sixteen scientists signed the article, claiming that 'There's no compelling scientific argument for drastic action to 'decarbonise' the world's economy.'

In part, they wrote: 'Perhaps the most inconvenient fact is the lack of global warming for well over 10 years now. This is known to the warming establishment, as one can see from the 2009 'Climategate' email of climate scientist Kevin Trenberth: 'The fact is that we can't account for the lack of warming at the moment and it is a travesty that we can't.' But the warming is only missing if one believes computer models where so-called feedbacks involving water vapor and clouds greatly amplify the small effect of CO2.

'New data shows that in fact the Earth has not warmed at all over the last 15 years. In fact, the DAILY MAIL reports that the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit, after taking data from nearly 30,000 stations around the world, have found that the earth stopped warming in 1997. The report suggests we are headed toward a new solar cycle, Cycle 25, which NASA scientists have predicted will be significantly cooler than Cycle 24 which we are in now. This data largely contradicts the accepted theory among the public that carbon dioxide pollution is causing global warming and even proposes that we are actually heading toward global cooling.'

The DAILY MAIL article, 'Forget global warming - it's Cycle 25 we need to worry about (and if NASA scientists are right the Thames will be freezing over again)' referred to in the Wall Street Journal stated: 'leading climate scientists yesterday told THE MAIL on Sunday that, after emitting unusually high levels of energy throughout the 20th Century, the sun is now heading towards a 'grand minimum' in its output, threatening cold summers, bitter winters and a shortening of the season available for growing food.

'Solar output goes through 11-year cycles, with high numbers of sunspots seen at their peak.

'We are now at what should be the peak of what scientists call 'Cycle 24' - which is why last week's solar storm resulted in sightings of the aurora borealis further south than usual. But sunspot numbers are running at less than half those seen during cycle peaks in the 20th Century.

'The figures suggest that we could even be heading for a mini ice age to rival the 70-year temperature drop that saw frost fairs held on the Thames in the 17th Century.

'Based on readings from more than 30,000 measuring stations, the data was issued last week without fanfare by the Met Office and the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit. It confirms that the rising trend in world temperatures ended in 1997.'

In 2007, the British-produced documentary 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' appeared, later made available on DVD. 'The Great Global Warming Swindle' interviewed scientists, academics, environmentalists, economists, politicians, and assorted writers who disagreed with the majority opinion on Global warming.

Among those interviewed was Canadian environmentalist Patrick Moore, former member of Greenpeace, who now speaks on behalf of the Canadian petroleum industry. According to the Financial Post, 'Dr. Moore left Greenpeace 15 years ago after co-founding it in Vancouver to establish a science-based approach to environmentalism. But he became a controversial figure for supporting nuclear energy, large-scale hydroelectric projects, the forestry industry and aquaculture, all of which he argues can be sustainable.'

Moore, who supports the development of the Canadian tar sands, said, 'I've seen the land reclamation progress at oil sands sites. It's a necessary, staggeringly complex process and evidence shows the land will be reclaimed as thriving ecosystems after oil sands are developed to help meet the world's growing energy needs.'

Others disagree.

About Global Warming

'Scientists have an independent obligation to respect and present the truth as they see it,' Al Gore said in his critically acclaimed film 'An Inconvenient Truth.'

The movie became an international success and was applauded by climate scientists.

In his book 'Our Choice,' Al Gore has picked up the theme of climate change and global warming and looked seriously at solutions.

In his intro, 'What Goes Up Must Come Down,' Mr Gore wrote: 'The violent impacts human civilization has on the earth's ecosystem add up to a worldwide ecological crisis that affects and threatens the habitability of the earth. But the deterioration of our atmosphere is by far the most serious manifestation of this crisis. It is inherently global and affects every part of the earth; it is a contributing and causative factor in most of the other crises; and if it is not quickly addressed, it has the potential to end human civilization as we know it.

'For all its complexity, however, its causes are breathtakingly simple and easy to understand.'

'Our Choice' deals with programs that could replace dirty oil, such as wind power and 'growing our fuel.'

For Al Gore, it's all about 'Changing the way we think. It is now apparent that the climate crisis is posing an unprecedented threat not only to the future livability of the planet but also to our assumptions about the ability of democracy and capitalism to recognize this threat for what it is and respond with appropriate boldness, scope, and urgency. Global warming has been described as the greatest market failure in history. It is also - so far - the biggest failure of democratic governance in history.

'In searching for the underlying reasons behind these twin historic failures, psychologists and neuroscientists have begun to argue that the climate crisis poses a unique and unprecedented challenge to our ability to use the rule of reason as a basis for urgent response.'

The long time geneticist, television producer, author and activist to reverse global climate change, Dr David Suzuki, wrote, in an article titled 'Finding solutions to global warming' - 'Conserving energy and finding cleaner sources of energy are two ways to reduce the threat of climate change and other effects of rampant fossil fuel use. Joining the clean energy revolution can also provide jobs and economic opportunities.

The problems with our reliance on fossil fuels are well-known: air and water pollution, greenhouse gas emissions that contribute to climate change, and rising prices as easily accessible sources dwindle, to name a few. With our work on clean energy, advocacy, and communications, the David Suzuki Foundation is committed to finding climate solutions that can improve the health of our citizens, our environment, and our economy.'

Global Warming Quotes:

'We are upsetting the atmosphere upon which all life depends. In the late '80s when I began to take climate change seriously, we referred to global warming as a 'slowmotion catastrophe' one we expected to kick in perhaps generations later. Instead, the signs of change have accelerated alarmingly.' David Suzuki

'The fact of the matter is that today, stuff-selling mega-corporations have a huge influence on our daily lives. And because of the competitive nature of our global economy, these corporations are generally only concerned with one thing - the bottom line. That is, maximizing profit, regardless of the social or environmental costs.' David Suzuki

'The terrible part of this looming catastrophe is that people have been working on solutions for years and have developed concrete steps to massively reduce our energy use, while stimulating whole new industries and technologies that are more efficient and affordable.' David Suzuki

Despite the doomsaying, activists like Al Gore and David Suzuki are still presenting ways to stop global warming.

So who do we believe?

The only way to decide about global warming and climate change is to read both sides and decide for yourself.
